Escape artist

John went to go get Trevor out of his crib this morning, but found that Trevor beat him to it! Trev was standing on the other side of his bedroom door banging to get out. We're not sure exactly how he managed it, but he found a way out of his crib sometime this morning, and must have made it without too much trauma because there was no large 'thunk' or screaming to alert us of his success. So we're heading up to Alaska this evening for a visit... hopefully grandma and grandpa Quigley have some solid gates!

Eating with tools

After many weeks of carrying cups and forks around the house for fun (seriously one of his favorite toys lately), pretending to feed mommy, pretending to feed Mr. Octopus-friend, he was able to use them to feed himself applesauce. It actually took two attempts. The first time he just played with the stuff and was not interested in putting any of it in his mouth. It seemed like the same thing was happening the second go around, but after a few minutes he decided it was worth attempting and went with it. It was surprisingly less messy than I thought--nothing on the floor, no flicking it around to walls. Maybe that's later...

Annual Check-up

Okay... technically it's more of a 13 month appointment than a 12 month appointment. Trevor had a pretty good memory of the doctor's office, since he had to go in less than a month ago for a sinus infection. As soon as I laid him down on the examination table he started screaming, even though it was only the nurse taking measurements. When I set him on the scale--more screams. When the doctor even started to look like he was going to touch him--huge deep guttural screams until he finished and backed away. After the doc was done (before the shots--given by a nurse), I overheard him tell the nurse that she should give him the shots keeping him in my lap cause boy he's a screamer... But the really funny part was when the different pretty nurse came in to give him his shots he immediately started smiling and talking to her. He had no problem laying down on the table and was happy to let her arrange him into the shot position--still smiling up until she stuck him with the needles. So he learned a valuable lesson today that you can't judge a book by it's cover. Well, he probably didn't really 'learn' the lesson...

His 13 month stats:
Weight: 22 1/4 pounds (between the 25th and 50th percentiles)
Length: 30 inches (just below the 50th percentile)
Head Circumference: 18.5 inches (between the 50th and 75th percentiles)

I have to say I question the length (it was taken when he was screaming and squirming) because he's taller or the same height as all the babies who are a couple months older. However, as of yet I have not been motivated to measure him myself. Maybe next time we can request the pretty nurse to take the measurements so he'll stay still.

Going down the slide all by himself!

Morning at the Park

We went to the shadiest park this morning before it got silly hot. Trevor seems to have discovered how to go down slides feet first all of the sudden, and is showing little fear of the height (...I would be okay with him developing slightly more fear with these things...). I guess people don't really go to the park on Mondays around here because it was pretty empty. The lack of exciting kiddos didn't stop him though--he managed to find a poking stick to play with for a while, dogs to point at, and birds to chase.

Backyard Busy-ness

Summertime means time to spiff up the backyard. We had a whole bunch of pokey rose bush vines growing up on the gazebo covering, so we took most of them out (due to the poking) and put in some Jessamine and another plant that we don't know the name of, but has pretty leaves that turn color in the fall. By 'we', I mean 'John' of course. Trevor likes to help out whenever possible--he's really into carrying the watering can around and pretending to water all of the flowers. I get the job of making sure Trevor's not "helping" too much and making sure he stays in the Trevor-approved zones. We've also got tomatoes, basil, rosemary, and thyme going this year...yum.

Our trip to Kennedy Meadows

We went up to Kennedy Meadows for a bit of hiking and lunch. It was cooler up there, making it possible to enjoy the hiking part of our trip. Trev enjoyed riding on John's back, no complaints the entire time (maybe partly due to the daddy-entertainment: leg grabs, talking, and wearing a hat to pull on). We took a bottle break before turning around and when we got back to the camp grounds found out just how quickly Trevor can cover himself with dirt. He turned into 'pigpen' from Peanuts in just a few seconds! He found several sticks to play with, and was pretty good with the 'no-fire' part (even though it seemed unfair daddy got to poke the fire with a stick). It was straight to the kiddy pool when we got home to remove the solid layer of dirt. He didn't seem to mind.
